Companies that would produce our film

I think that there is a company that is likely to both produce and distribute our film ‘ Turf War’, Working Title I think that they would distribute our film because Working Title is a British film company that every year produce 4-5 films, one of which is usually including 1 potentially risky one, this is the reason why I think that Working Title with both produce and distribute our film is because even if it’s a risky investment, we still have a better chance of success if we go to Working Title because they sometimes accept the risky films to make, because even if they don’t make a profit they are owned by Universal which can support them. This is why they take on at least one risky film per year.

I think that if we had the chance, we would send this off to Working Title for them to distribute and produce as they have done for so many classic films like the boat that rocked, the soloist but even though these aren’t crime genre films Working Title have created some very memorable crime genre films such as Johnny English and Ali G inda house.

Summer Work (Maybe a little late)

Story Arc

our film starts off with an action scene between two rival gang leaders fighting over the same territory which then ends with a fade out, which text then comes up on the screen saying '3 weeks earlier'. The act will only really show the main introductions of the two main characters in this film who were shown earlier; the two gang leaders.
The next act will be the main introduction for the original gang leader (Myself) and my few gang members that I have collected, these short, snappy and sharp shots will be showing how well the gang get along as the shots will show companionship that these boys have within the gang as there are scenes of laughter, games and friendly banter being thrown around the group, the scene then ends when the boys all decide to walk home and go their separate ways as they walk home.

The third act starts off with a short few second shot of Me walking down the street going home, when it quickly cuts to a few guys rushing up behind me, to which they start attacking me in the middle of the street, after they are done beating me up they say that they are taking over my turf and if I try and stop them then they'd kill me. There would then be short sharp scenes of drug selling/use and vandalism.

The fourth act is a long scene of the original gang talking in one of the members houses, talking about what they are going to do about the new gang that has taken over their turf, but I as the gang leader would prefer to have a peaceful relationship between the two gangs. Though in between we would show brief scenes of the rival gang growing stronger and stronger by the second.

The final act would start off as a black screen with the sound of a gunshot going off creating suspense, then a slanted shot of the original gang sprinting around a corner towards where the gunshot was heard, where you would see Me lying on the ground bleeding out, the rest of the original gang run over to Chris and beat him to death.

Jelly Baby Task

1) In this first shot it sets the scene what is about to occur.
2) This shot shows a man on top of a building threatening to jump, distracting everybody from what's really going on.
3) In the next scene, this one shows some men gearing up with some guns to rob the nearby bank whilst their friend distracts everyone as he threatens to jump
4) This scene is the initial banking robbing scene as the men burst in through the front door guns blazing, taking hostages while striking fear into their hearts at the same time.
5) Then in this final scene it shows that the bank robbers were successful in collecting the money and are escaping from the bank with it.

Casting

The person that we decided to cast for our opening scene was our classmate Chris Tadd, the reason that we thought it would be best to cast him of all people is because he can adapt well to most characters that he is given, plus he gets into the character that he is playing. We can also trust him to be serious about the acting, unlike some people that usually aren’t serious about it because they don’t do media.

Shot Location

Locations to film:

  1. Wooded area
  2. Alleyway
  3. Housing estate

The reason why we chose to try and film our opening scene at these three locations was because we thought that they would provide a good backdrop for our particular genre of film (Crime). These places are usually often seen in Crime films:

  1. Kidult hood
  2. Adulthood
  3. Ill manors

So we thought that it would be best to use places that are typically found in these sorts of film. But in the end we decided just to use a wooded area for our filming because it was a more secluded area where two gang members might meet to discuss business, away from the public eye.

Sound of movie

While deciding what type of music to have in our opening scene, we thought that it would best to just have one song running through the middle of the opening scene, because that’s where all the action is. So we thought not to go for a soundtrack, but just for one particular song that we thought worked best with the scene.

The song that we decided to go for in the end of all our searching was, Plan B – ill manors (instrumental) we found this song while browsing on YouTube and the reason why we decided to use this song in particular is because we saw that when we put it over the top of our opening scene, that it just seemed to work well with the scene.

Character Theory's

There are many different people that have come up with character theories for, the five main theories that are mainly used for different Medias are: Goffman, Propp, Bartle, Cambell Flectcher and Greenhill and Bishop’s character theory.

Each theory suggests different amounts of characters for each individual theory. Goffman’s character theory suggests four main types of characters either in a media production or text:

  1. The protagonist (leading character)
  2. The deuteragonist (secondary character)
  3. The bit player(minor character who specific background the audience is not aware of)
  4. The fool (a character that uses humor to convey messages)

Propp’s character theory has developed a character theory also for media texts and productions, but this theory instead indicates that there are seven characters instead of four.

  1. The villain (struggle against the hero)
  2. The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)
  3. The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)
  4. The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)
  5. The false hero (perceived as a good character in beginning but emerges as evil)
  6. The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)
  7. The hero (reacts to the donor and weds the princess)

Bartle’s character theory instead of going for a large amount of characters he goes back to the first theory and goes for four main characters and this theory is also used for analysing early virtual worlds today.

  1. Achievers (preferred to gain points, levels and equipment)
  2. Explorer (preferred to be discovering areas, creating maps and learning about hidden areas)
  3. Socializers (preferred to be interacting with other players)
  4. Killers (preferred to depart from the normality of being “the good guy” who comes to save the day and play on the side of evil)

Bishops is a character theory for analysing online communities, including internet trolling, but like all of the other theory’s that have either had four or seven characters, this theory has twelve characters that revolve around this theory.

  1. Lurker – Lurkers make silent calls by accident or modifying opinion polls.
  2. Elder – an elder is an out bound member of the community, often engaging in trolling newer members of something
  3. Troll – a troll takes part in trolling to entertain others and bring some entertaining to an online community
  4. Big man – a big man does trolling by posting something pleasing to others in order to support their world view
  5. Flirt – a flirt takes part in trolling to help others be sociable
  6. Snert – a snert takes place in trolling to harm others for their own sick entertainment
  7. MHBFY Jenny – a MHBFY Jenny takes part in trolling to help people see the lighter side of life and to help others come to terms with their concerns
  8. E-venger – an E-venger does trolling in order to trip someone up so that their ‘ true colours’ are revealed
  9. Chat room Bob – a chatroom Bob takes part in trolling to gain the trust of other members I order to exploit them
  10. Ripper – a ripper takes part in self-deprecating trolling in order to build a false sense of empathy from others
  11. Wizard – a wizard does trolling through making up and sharing content that has a humorous effect
  12. Iconoclast – an iconoclast takes part in trolling to help others discover ‘the truth’ often by telling them things completely factual, but which may drive them into a state of consternation

Campbell, Fletcher and Greenhill’s character theory is also used for analysing online communities based on tribal typologies. In this type of character theory there are three character types that have been identified.

  1. The Big Man (offer a form of order and stability to the community by absorbing many conflictual situations personally)
  2. The Sorcerer (will not engage in reciprocity with others in the community)
  3. The Trickster ( generally a comical yet complex figure that is found in most of the world’s culture)
Looking through all of these many different theories I would have to say that the one that would be the closest theory to my opening film would have to be the Goffman’s character theory as I play the protagonist who is trying to save his territory from a rival gang that is trying to steal it from him, Chris Tadd plays the deuteragonist, the secondary character who is the rival gang leader who is trying to steal the territory from the protagonist, so I would have to say that, that is the closest theory mainly because it doesn’t have that many characters in the theory, like our film opening only has two characters in it, which is close to the first two characters in the theory.

Film Brief

We decided to do a Crime genre film but form the side of the youth that are causing the problems, including rivalry and turf wars. We decided to do this as it would be a major contrast from the type of crime films that are usually produced, mainly focusing on how the youth affect the community around them in a bad way rather then the problems they face amongst themselves. We plan on doing this by having multiple scenes of violence and vandalism from the new gang in town as this would show how they are affecting the original gangs operations and preventing them from carrying on peacefully and so we will include the different the reactions amongst the protagonist's group of the events taking place in their home town. However we will also include the overwhelming strength of the opposing gang by having the scenes in which the antagonist overcomes the protagonist and use camera angles to make it subliminally clear that the protagonist is weaker than his enemies.

Risk Assessment

We are going to film a fake fight scene, so there is a risk of accidently causing harm to each other by accident, so to prevent this we will be extra careful in our planning and co-ordinating of actions, the scene will also be set in a field where there are potentially small ditches, in which we could possibly twist our ankle. to prevent injuries here we will keeping a constant eye out for potential trip hazards.
In the final scene, Chris is going to fall back into Declan's arms while Chris is holding a camera for a POV however, if he would miss the catch, Chris might get injured, so he needs to be in the right place when he falls so he doesn't miss the catch.
